Herb Garden and the Four Types of Herbs
Our Back Yard Garden in July/05

The backyard is small due to the fact we have a corner lot. We’ve made the most of it and actually have extended our living quarters(the kitchen) to the outside with the deck and fencing. With a summer such as this one, we enjoy eating most of our meals, not to mention the morning coffee outside. It’s such a treat after the long Canadian winters.

No matter how you see it, growing herbs is very beneficial. Sure it can be hard or perhaps, gruesome for first-time-gardeners, but at the end of the day, it’s sure to bring more pros than cons.
The good news is that herbs can be easy to grow. If you provide them with the conditions that they like, most of them actually take the least amount of care in your garden.
And if you’re a beginning gardener, then herbs are must-grow items because of that fact alone. Including herbs will give you the confidence you need to go on to more “difficult” plants.
If, on the other hand, you’re an experienced gardener, then no doubt you’ll appreciate these amazing plants for that very same reason. Once you have established your garden, it takes little effort on your part to get it to look absolutely spectacular and keep it that way (But of course, I encourage you to take all the credit your guests would like to toss your way!)
But before you worry yourself with the complicated things like choosing the soil, pots and where to have the garden, it seems very mandatory that you know first the different types of herbs.
Culinary herbs.
For many people, this class of herb is the most recognizable and the most useful. Even those who have never used an herbal supplement in their life, know what some fresh basil can do to a meal. Or the difference some oregano can make in spaghetti sauce. And how some fresh chives can make a baked potato come to life.
Aromatic herbs.
While some of these may include culinary herbs, aromatic herbs usually are grown to be used as additives in products such as perfumes, toilet water and other items needing a radiant fragrance.
Ornamental herbs.
Then again, your desire to grow herbs may simply be make create a bright environmental. No doubt, you’ve seen the brightly colored flowers and foliage of many of these gorgeous plants. Some have less color and more pastel or even whitish looking flowers.
Medicinal herbs.
Perhaps of all the classifications of herbs, no history is more interesting than that of medicinal herbs. Our ancestors at one time prized these plants. Sometimes they were the only tools that stood between them and death. In eras gone by, when medical knowledge was either nonexistent or in its infancy, every family had at least on amateur herbalist in its family tree.
